Yeah, I know I just referenced an album from Oasis from a previous century...from 1995, to be precise. Stay with me...I'm going somewhere with this.

The story we tell ourselves

There is a story we tell ourselves every day. Or several stories. We say it when we roll out of bed, step into the shower, brush our teeth, or drive down the tollway. It's a little niggling voice of varying persistency that stems from self-doubt, insecurity, and fear. It can also be known as imposter syndrome.

Here's what I mean. We tell ourselves tales that aren't true...but they are easy-to-believe excuses for why something happened...or before anything ever happens. Have you ever told yourself these things:

  • I'm ugly.

  • I'm not smart enough.

  • I'm not good enough.

  • I'm "less than."

  • My _____ will just hold me back.

  • My life isn't as good as _____'s.

  • I'm too fat.

  • I'm too thin.

What is the story (or stories) you tell yourself? Why do we tell ourselves so many negative ones? And why do we so readily believe them?

Guess what? You're in charge of the narrative you tell yourself.

Throw yourself a compliment

I'm going to challenge you to do something. Catch yourself in the morning and ask yourself what story you'll tell yourself that day: "Self, what's my story?"

Go a step further and give yourself a compliment. You're a Star. An Accomplished Journalist. Smart Cookie. Skilled Marketing Professional with over 20 years of experience (see what I did there?). You're whatever you think you are...

Talented Chef.

Exceptional Esthetician.

Knowledgeable, Helpful Realtor.

Resourceful Administrative Assistant.

Caring Teacher.

God's Creation.

Loving Wife.

Thoughtful Friend.

Sexy Beast, if you must. (I'm not judging.)

Or Morning Glory (which symbolizes affection, by the way).

So call yourself this thing that you are!

I'm preaching to myself right now as much as I'm saying this to anyone else who might read it.

So...

What's your story, Morning Glory? :)
